Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Monday received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in Patna.

Coincidentally, today is also the chief minister's birthday. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished Kumar on his birthday and praised him for undertaking numerous measures for the development of the state.

"Best wishes to Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Ji on his birthday. Under his leadership, the NDA Government in Bihar is undertaking numerous measures for developing the state. Praying for his long and healthy life," PM Modi tweeted.

This comes as PM Modi was also administered the vaccine at AIIMS Delhi on Monday morning. The PM was given a dose of Covaxin which has been developed indigenously by biotechnology firm Bharat Biotech and the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Speaking to the media after the vaccination, P Niveda, one of the nurses who administered the vaccine to the PM, said, "After taking the vaccine, the Prime Minister remarked, Laga Bhi Di, Pata Hi Nahi Chala" (Oh it’s done, I didn't even feel it).” She added that the PM also chatted with the two nurses and asked them where they were from.

"Took my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at AIIMS. Remarkable how our doctors and scientists have worked in quick time to strengthen the global fight against COVID-19," tweeted PM Modi.

Appealing to people to take the vaccine, PM tweeted, "I appeal to all those who are eligible to take the vaccine. Together, let us make India COVID-19 free!"

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik took the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on Monday as the nationwide inoculation drive of persons above 60 and those over 45 with illnesses began.

"Happy to share that I took my first dose of #COVID19 vaccine today. Grateful to our scientists, health workers for their race against time to deliver the vaccines to people," tweeted Patnaik.
