The Bihar government breathed a sigh of relief as the intermediate exams of the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) concluded without any major hiccups on Saturday. About 1,750 students were expelled for using unfair means in the exam that was taken by over 12.61 lakh students.

The state exam board has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in the past two years. While photographs of mass cheating in matriculation exams brought disrepute to Bihar in 2015, the intermediate topper scam in 2016 made international headlines last year.

The most recent exposure of a job racket in the Bihar Staff Selection Commission (BSSC) inter-level combined competitive exams had put a big question mark on the state’s ability to conduct fair public exams.

“BSEB’s Class XII exams have passed peacefully. Strict measures such as frisking of students and CCTV cameras had been put in place across all 1,274 exam centres in Bihar to ensure that examinees do not take chits inside the exam hall,” BSEB chairman Anand Kishor said on Saturday.

Random checks were conducted by senior officials to see if all directives of the Board were being followed.
