NDA is all set to form the new government in Bihar with Nitish Kumar once again at the helm of affair as the Chief Minister of the state, already having served the office for more than 14 years.

However there is a buzz that a Dalit leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to replace the incumbent Sushil Kumar Modi as the Deputy CM of Bihar.

If reports are to be believed, Kameshwar Chaupal is expected to be named as next Bihar Deputy Chief Minister by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Who is Kameshwar Chaupal?

Kameshwar Chaupal is a Dalit leader of the BJP who laid the foundation stone for Ram Mandir at the shilanyas site in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya on November 9, 1989.

He was accorded the rare honour of performing the first 'shilanyas' as part of the Sangh Parivar’s social engineering. He coined the slogan ‘Ram with Roti’.

Kameshwar Chaupal is one of the 15 members of a trust set up on the directions of the Supreme Court to construct a Ram temple at Ayodhya.

An RSS swayamsevak, Kameshwar Chaupal is currently the member of Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra trust.

Raising Chaupal to the post of Deputy CM could also help the BJP build a Dalit vote bank to occupy the space vacated by LJP chief Chirag Paswan.

Interestingly, he has never won any elections. From Rosera Lok Sabha seat in 1991, Chaupal had contested against Lok Janshakti Party founder Ram Vilas Paswan, who passed away ahead of 2020 Bihar polls.

However, he was defeated. In the 1995 Bihar Assembly Elections, he contested from Bakhari seat in Begusarai but again lost.

In 2014 elections, the BJP had fielded him against Pappu Yadav's wife Ranjeet Ranjan from Supaul seat. However, he could not win that time as well.

Why the speculation around Chaupal?

The speculation around Kameshwar Chaupal strengthened after hundreds of supporters of Chaupal raised slogans demanding his elevation as deputy CM, upon his arrival at the Patna airport.

The Bihar NDA held its first meeting after the Assembly elections on Friday which was attended by Kameshwar Chaupal.

For his part, Chaupal said he had no official word on any new assignment within the government or the party.

'I am a committed member of the party. I have full faith in my leader and the leadership. I have always tried to do whatever responsibility I was given with complete honesty and integrity,' said Chaupal. He added that he will fulfill every responsibility which will be given by the party to him in the future.
