Profile of Bhubaneswar Lok Sabha constituency:

Odisha's capital Bhubaneswar is seeing a battle of bureaucrats in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. In contention are the former Mumbai Police Chief Arup Patnaik, fighting for BJD, and ex-IAS officer Aparajita Sarangi, who has got a BJP ticket.

Bhubaneswar has been a BJD fort which the party has been winning since 1998. But this time around sensing anti-incumbency, BJD has dropped its five-time MP Prasanna Kumar Patasani. BJP's Aparajita Sarangi is extremely popular for her stint as Commissioner of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation. Naveen Patnaik who has nurtured the city dedicatedly and recently increased its profile by conducting big-ticket sporting events will hope that BJD again gets the support of the people.

Congress is not contesting from Bhubaneswar despite past success and the seat has been allocated to veteran politician CPI(M)'s Janardhan Pati. The interesting thing though is despite being an old- Left hand, this is Pati's first foray into electoral politics. So in that, all three major candidates from Bhubaneswar are newbies.

TMC and BSP have also fielded candidates from this seat. In the past, Congress has won Bhubaneswar eight times and the Left has won thrice. BJD has won five times in a row. So BJP has never won from Bhubaneswar and yet most pundits believe Sarangi has a decent chance of winning the Capital contest. The assembly segments under Bhubaneswar are Jayadev, Bhubaneswar Central, Bhubaneswar North, Ekamra-Bhubaneswar, Jatni, Begunia and Khurda. Bhubaneswar goes to poll on April 23.
