Following the unrest that grew as a result of molestation of a girl student on the campus, Tripathi was forced to go on a leave by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in October. After his exit from the campus, it was the first time that Tripathi came to the campus and students protested his entry with placards and slogans against him.

Sources on campus said that his car was also blocked by agitating students, some of whom also banged his car's doors while he was on his way out after the farewell function was over.

"We got to know of VC's presence in the campus quite late as administration had not informed students other than those from the medical college about the function. Administration had done not informed other students on purpose fearing protests but students still got to know and gathered on the campus streets to protests against him. When he was leaving the campus, some of them tried to block his way and banged the doors of his car," a BHU student told DNA over phone from Banaras.

He was supposed to go pay respect to the statue of Madan Mohan Malviya, founder of the university, by offering garland but because of the protests he had to cancel the plan and leave the campus quickly.

After Tripathi went on an indefinite leave, Neeraj Tripathi, who was holding the position of Registrar took over as the VC. The process of finding the new VC for BHU is on.
