Rao was arrested by Pune police on August 28 on the charges of having Maoists links and playing an active role in organising Elgaar Parishad in Pune at the instructions of Maoists operatives to incite the mob against the government.
Along with Rao, activists Sudha Bharadwaj, Gautam Navlakha, Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira were also arrested on the same day. However, on the order of the Supreme Court, they were kept under house arrest and asked to approach the appropriate court for further legal remedies.
Rao had approached the Hyderabad High Court, challenging the transit remand order issued by the chief metropolitan magistrate, Hyderabad. However, the High Court refused to set aside the transit remand order and disposed-off the case.
After the court's order, a team of Pune police went to Rao's house from where he was picked by the police on Saturday evening.
Confirming the police action, joint commissioner of Police Shivaji Bodkhe told DNA, "He was already arrested by our team but he was kept under house arrest as per Supreme Court's orders. The period of the house arrest got over today and when the Hyderabad High Court also disposed-off his plea, our team took him in their custody from his house."
"He will be brought to Pune and he will be produced before the court on Sunday," Bodkhe added. The Pune police already have got the custody of Sudha Bharadwaj, Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira.
