The bypolls in Bhabanipur are set to be conducted today, September 30, amid strict security measures and precautions in Kolkata, West Bengal. The elections will be contested by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her BJP rival Priyanka Tibrewal.

The Election Commission of India has decided to conduct the Bhabanipur bypolls under strict security restrictions to prevent any slight possibility of post-poll violence. Strict guidelines have been issued by the EC to the state government and Kolkata police to make sure that the security during the polls is not compromised.

The Bhabanipur constituency assembly bypolls have caught the public eye as they will determine the fate of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is currently not an MLA in the state. If she loses these elections, she will have to step down from her CM post.

CM Mamata Banerjee contested the state assembly elections in West Bengal from the Nandigram constituency earlier this year but was defeated by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. West Bengal Agriculture Minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay stepped down from his MLA post in Bhabanipur in May to make way for the chief minister to contest the elections.

BJP Yuva Morcha vice president Priyanka Tibrewal will be contesting the Bhabanipur elections against the present chief minister from TMC. Tibrewal is a lawyer by profession and is also one of the petitioners against the West Bengal post-poll violence in the Calcutta High Court.

The security detail and deployment of personnel have been majorly beefed up in Kolkata for the elections set to take place today. On the direction of the Election Commission, the Kolkata authorities have issued Section 144 in all the areas falling under a 200-metre radius from the polling stations.

To make sure that there are no instances of post-poll violence this time, more than 20 additional companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed for the Bhabanipur bypolls. As per the state government, restrictions and security measures will be in place till the time the polling concludes today evening.
