Constituency profile

Dwivedi was in news recently for making misogynistic remarks on Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Commenting on her entry into UP politics (she is Congress in charge of UP East), he invoked her choice of dresses in a demeaning way.

Upon being asked about the possible impact of Priyanka Gandhi's entry into active politics ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha election,  Dwivedi told media persons in Basti, "For me or the BJP, Priyanka Gandhi is not an issue. If Rahul Gandhi is a failure, Priyanka is also a failure. Everyone knows that when Priyanka Gandhi is in Delhi she wears jeans and top but dons saree and sindoor when she comes to the constituencies."

A first time MP, Dwivedi, who joined the BJP as a youth leader, was the president of Uttar Pradesh unit of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM).

He defeated Brij Kishor Singh 'Dimpal' of the Samajwadi Party in 2014 to win the seat with a margin of 33,000 votes. Before him, the BSP held the seat twice - Lal Mani Prasad from 2004-09 and Arvind Kumar Chaudhary from 2009-14.

Between 1991 to 2004, the seat was held by the BJP. While Shyam Lal Kamal won in 1991, Sriram Chauhan won thrice in a row - 1996, 1998 and 1999. The Congress last won the seat in 1984 when Ram Awadh Prasad emerged victorious.

There are five assembly constituencies in Basti Lok Sabha constituency: Harraiya, Kaptanganj, Rudhauli, Basti Sadar and Mahadewa (SC). All five assembly seats are currently held by the BJP.
