India is celebrating the 150 birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and several events are being organised by in the country as well as abroad.
In his last 'Mann Ki Baat' radio programme of the year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the India-South Africa connect with the special ties that father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi shared with the country. The PM said, "Bapu had a special connection with South Africa. It was in South Africa where Mohan became Mahatma. It was in South Africa, Mahatma Gandhi started his 1st satyagraha, stood against racism. He founded Phoenix and Tolstoy farms from where demands for peace and justice reverberated around the world."
PM added that Mahatma Gandhi's "first experiment with truth was here (South Africa). It was here that he showed his exceptional determination for justice. He developed a philosophy of satyagraha and methods of struggle here."

During the radio address PM Modi said, "This year we are celebrating 150 birth anniversary of Bapu. Its a matter of great pride that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa would be the chief guest at republic day 2019. "
The PM also talked about Nelson Mandela who was "an icon in the fight against apartheid" and said he drew his inspiration from Mahatma. 2018 is being observed as the birth centenary year of Nelson Mandela. Drawing parallels between "Madiba" and "Bapu" PM said, "Bapu and Mandela are a source of inspiration for the world. Their ideals encourage us to build a loving and sympathetic society."
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially handed over the invite to South African President in a bilateral on the sidelines of G20 in Argentina on 1st December.
PM Modi had paid an official visit to South Africa from 7-9 July 2016 and visited Pretoria, Johannesburg, Pietermaritzburg and Durban
