Amid opposition uproar over the publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's video from 2014 election campaign where he had said that Bangladeshi immigrants will be sent back if NDA comes to power.

In 2014, addressing a public rally in Assam, Modi had said that as soon as BJP comes to power at the Centre, detention camps housing Hindu migrants from Bangladesh will be done away with.

"You have to decide whether you will continue to tolerate Bangladeshi harassment or put an end to it. I have come to you for your answer. Trust me and as soon as we come to power we will take immediate steps to redress these problems and ensure that justice prevails," he had said.

Today, the BJP posted a short clip of his speech as the much-anticipated second and final draft of the NRC with 2.89 crore names out of the total 3.29 crore applicants was published.

However, around 40.07 lakh applicants, did not find a place in the document, touted to be a proof of Assamese identity. One name missing from the list was Mohd Azmal Hoque, a retired soldier from Assam who had served in the military for 30 years and retired on September 30, 2016.

The NRC will include the names of all Indian citizens who have been residing in Assam before March 25, 1971.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that the process of publishing the complete draft today was carried out in cooperation with the Registrar General of India, along with the central and the state government officials, under the direct supervision of the Supreme Court.

However, the opposition TMC, Congress, CPI(M) and SP criticised the government over the publication of the list, saying it puts "human rights and democratic rights" of people at stake.
