Pratap Chandra Sarangi of the BJP defeated Biju Janata Dal candidate and sitting MP Rabindra Kumar Jena by a 12956 vote margin.

Balasore Lok Sabha constituency in Odisha voted on April 29. Here's a look at how candidates fared:

Counting yet to complete but Pratap Sarangi is leading by 11 thousand votes and that is likely to be the final tally.  

At 6.30 PM, BJP's Pratap Sarangi ahead against BJD's Rabindra Jena by 6272 votes. 

Balasore Lok Sabha constituency profile: 

Balasore Lok Sabha seat in coastal Odisha is expected to witness a tough contest between ruling party in the state Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and BJP. Presence of Congress makes it a three-way contest. 

BJP is hoping to win Balasore, which it has done in the past, though at that time it was in alliance with BJD. Balasore is one of the rare seats in Odisha which all the three major parties have won in the recent past. 

India conducting Mission Shakti, where it showed skills to destroy satellites is an election issue in Balasore, which is a testing site for India's missile defence programme. PM Modi who campaigned in Balasore said,"Balasore's name has been recorded in history, the anti-satellite missile was launched from this place. The previous governments had shied away from demonstrating the country's defence capability as they were busy serving the interests of a 'namdar' family".

BJD won the seat in 2014 with Rabindra Kumar Jena defeating Pratap Sarangi of BJP by a margin of 1.42 lakh votes. 2019 will be an encore with sitting MP Jena fighting against firebrand BJP leader Sarangi. Nabajyoti Patnaik is Congress candidate. 

BJP candidate is repeatedly stressing on installing double engine for development to indicate both state and Centre should have same party in power. BJD chief Patnaik though is confident of winning and has even extended PM Modi invitation to come for his swearing-in ceremony. Odisha is having simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly election. 

In 2009, senior Congress leader Shrikant Jena won from Balasore. Before that BJP's Kharabela Swain had won the seat thrice in row. Historically, Congress has emerged victorious nine times from Balasore. 

Assembly segment under Balasore LS are: Badasahi,Jaleswar,Bhograi,Basta,Balasore,Remuna and Nilagiri Balasore voted in the fourth phase on April 29.
