Congress MP from Moradabad Mohammad Azharuddin today met UPCC chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi in the district jail here and said that she had been put behind bars despite tendering apology to chief minister Mayawati.

"She has been unnecessarily put behind bars, despite she having tendered her apology last night to Mayawati" for her alleged derogatory remarks against the Chief Minister, the former Indian cricket captain said after meeting Joshi.

Azharuddin also alleged that BSP was getting frustrated in UP by the growing popularity of the Congress.

"Joshi has never spoken anything against the Dalits. In fact she has always spoken in favour of the Dalit women," Azharuddin told reporters.

He also termed the act of ransacking Joshi's house located near UP Secretariat in Lucknow as "undemocratic" and demanded strict action against those involved.
