SRINAGAR: Brother in law of former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was gheraoed by a mob in Hyderpora locality on the outskirts of the city, prompting his security guards to fire in the air to rescue him, official sources said here on Saturday.

Rayees Dev had gone to a local medical shop on Fridays night along with some of his house helps and personal security guards when a group of people surrounded him and started raising slogans against him and his family including Azad, the sources said.

This led to an altercation between Dev's escorts and the mob, following which the guards opened fire in the air to rescue him from being attacked by the mob, they added.

Although the Dev family has been targeted by militants in the past for being related to Azad, this is for the first time in the past 18 years that anyone form the family has been targeted by the common man.
