Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati today warned of strict action against any attempt to vitiate the communal atmosphere after the Ayodhya verdict.

Her warning came close on the heels of the remarks by SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav that he was disappointed by the Ayodhya title suits verdict as he felt faith was given "priority" over legal procedures.

"...anyone who tries to disturb the communal atmosphere in the state would be dealt with strictly," Mayawati told reporters without making any direct reference to Yadav.

"I would like to appeal the people of the state that they should not get influenced by provocative statements being made by some persons," she said.

Administration and police officials have been asked to remain alert and maintain a close vigil till the matter reaches the Supreme Court and a stay is granted, Mayawati said.

She asked the Centre to ensure strict implementation of the high court verdict on the Ayodhya title suits.

"The Centre should fulfil its responsibility of ensuring status quo for the next three months," she said.

"If any activity takes place on the site which disturbs law and order in the state and the country due to slightest laxity on the part of the Centre on this hyper-sensitive issue, then the Centre will be completely responsible for it," Mayawati said.

She said that the Centre should maintain a close vigil through its various agencies.

Mayawati said that the HC verdict was not final as Sunni Wakf Board and the Hindu Mahasabha have announced to challenge it in the Apex court.

She said that people of all religions, specially Muslims, should not worry about their security. "The state government will protect them and their property at all cost," she said.

Mayawati also praised the media for the responsibility it it had shown in covering the issue and said that it helped the government in maintaining peace and harmony.
