The National Institute of Virology has undertaken a study to find out if the viral strain of H1N1 flu has undergone any mutation in India.
The NIV study assumes significance as the country reported the first case of Influenza A H1N1 virus on Saturday. NIV director AC Mishra told DNA the study has been undertaken to see if there has been any evolution of the virus. βWe are closely examining the viral strain for any changes in its genetic make-up,β he said, explaining that the study includes analysis of the disease, its pattern, mutations and characteristics.
Mishra, who had earlier said that the H1N1 virus may not survive in the Indian heat conditions, said the ongoing study is divided in two parts β identification and characterisation. βThe study will help us predict whether the virus will die out, get milder or become virulent,β he said.
According to the NIV director, scientists are trying to decode if the virus strain, found in the 23-year old medial student, is the same as that found in Mexico, where the current outbreak originated.
βWe are also trying to examine if the viral strain found in Mexico is different from the viral strains in other countries,β he said.
