Atal tunnel: After 3 accidents in 72 hours, new rules come into effect

Many tourists have been caught on CCTV violating the speed limit of 80km/hour. Three accidents have already been reported from the tunnel in the last 72 hours.

Since the inauguration of the Atal Rohtang Tunnel on October 3, the tunnel has become a centre of attraction for locals and tourists alike. But there are certain things bothering the authorities in a big way. According to officials, a large number of people especially tourists are often seen gathered inside the tunnel. Over speeding and unnecessary stoppages of vehicles have also been reported by officials monitoring the movement inside the tunnel.

Many tourists have been caught on CCTV violating the 80km/hour speed restrictions. Three accidents have already been reported from the tunnel in the last 72 hours.

Considering the safety and security of the people, the District Magistrate issued a notification on Wednesday (October 7, 2020). Using the powers conferred under Section 116 and CrPC Section 144 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the Magistrate passed orders to control the traffic in the recently inaugurated Atal Rohtang Tunnel. 

According to the order, unnecessary stoppage, over speeding, rash driving, dangerously overtaking, etc., have been completely banned inside the Atal Rohtang Tunnel. Strict action will be implemented under the new Motor Vehicles Act, 2019 for any violation.

According to the order, unnecessary movement along the emergency exit tunnel has also been completely banned. In case of violation, strict action will be implemented against the offenders. In the South Portal, photography and videography have been completely banned from the area 200 meters before the start of the tunnel to the end of the tunnel.

The all-weather tunnel, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi reduces the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 k and the travel time by almost 5 hours.

The 9.02km long tunnel is built at a cost of Rs 3,200 crore and connects Manali in Himachal Pradesh to Lahaul-Spiti. The tunnel is set to reduce road distance by 46 kilometres between Leh and Manali.
