After the photo goof-up by Pakistan's top UN diplomat Maleeha Lodhi, India and Pakistan on Monday clashed at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) session. Exercising its right to reply, India fielded Paulomi Tripathi, a junior diplomat at its Permanent Mission at the UN, who displayed the picture of Lt. Umar Faiyaz and reminded how the young Kashmiri officer was brutally tortured and killed by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists in May 2017. Immediately after her submission, Pakistani representative Tipu Usman, embarrassed at the picture goof-up by his senior diplomat, accused India of "hiding behind photographs".

Tripathi said Pakistan has sought to divert attention from its role as the hub of global terrorism. "She (Pakistan's representative) did so, callously holding up a picture of an injured girl. It was a photograph of Rawya Jom'a, a girl from Palestine. The picture was taken on 22 July by an American photographer Heidi Levine. The photograph was published by New York Times on 24 March under the caption 'Conflict, Courage and Healing in Gaza'," she said.

The Indian diplomat accused Pakistan of misleading the UNGA by displaying the picture to spread falsehood about India. "A fake picture to push a completely false narrative," she added.

She said that in view of such a cynical act, she was constrained to show the UN body a photograph that reflects the real picture of pain inflicted by the nefarious designs of Pakistan on India. Tripathi reminded the House that unlike the fake picture displayed by Pakistan, she was holding a real picture of young Kashmiri officer Umar Faiyaz who was kidnapped at a wedding celebration.

"This is a true picture. It portrays a harsh and tragic reality. A picture of terrorism emanating from across our borders that the people of India, especially in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, have to struggle with every day. This is the reality which the Permanent Representative of Pakistan sought to obfuscate," she concluded.

Immediately after her reply, before the UNGA session was adjourned, the Pakistani diplomat also exercised his right to second reply, accusing India of brutally suppressing what he claimed a "freedom movement" in Jammu and Kashmir. Stung by the display of a fake picture by his senior colleague, Chheema said there are thousands of picture emanating from Jammu and Kashmir that speak for themselves. He said India will have to answer the ground situation. He also raked up incidents of lynching and also charged India with backing terror groups like TTP and Jammat-ul-Ahrar. "It is not Pakistan, but India's animosity against Pakistan that is its biggest enemy," he said.
