The Assam government has also declared the day as a paid public holiday, a state government release said.

The government declaration will be applicable to offices of the state and Central government, public sector undertakings (PSU), corporations, boards, banks and educational institutions, it said.

As per a notification announced of the Election Commission of India counting of votes will be on April 13 and the entire election process must be completed by April 15.

The by-election to the Dhemaji assembly constituency was necessitated as BJP MLA Pradan Baruah vacated the seat after he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Lakhimpur seat.
