All shops and business establishments were closed and vehicles remained off the roads, police said. Government offices were opened but attendance was thin.

The National Highway 37 was blocked by the protesters at Raha, Phulaguri and Kathiatoli. Hundreds of protesters were taken into preventive custody at Raha. The bandh has been called by local units of All Assam Students Union (AASU), All Tiwa Students Union (ATSU) and Asom Jatiya Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti (MASS) from 5 AM on Monday.

The organisations are protesting against Assam Government's decision to establish the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) at Changsari and demanded that it be set up at Raha in Central Assam.
