Around 30% of COVID-19 cases in India linked to Tablighi Jamaat incident: Health Ministry

The Ministry of Home Affairs informed that 2,000 Tableeghi Jamaat workers and their contacts have been quarantined.

The Health Ministry on Saturday announced that around 30% of the coronavirus cases in India are linked to the religious congregation organised by Tablighi Jamaat at Nizamuddin Markaz. It stated that 1023 COVID19 cases have been found linked to the event.

"Till now we have found cases related to Tablighi Jamaat from 17 states, 1023 COVID19 positive cases have been found to be linked to this event. Out of the total cases in the country, around 30% are linked to one particular place," av Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Health Ministry stated.

The Ministry of Home Affairs informed that 2,000 Tablighi Jamaat workers and their contacts have been quarantined. 

Providing an agewise breakdown of the positive coronavirus cases, Health Ministry informed that 8.61% cases of the patients belong to 0-20 years group, 42% belong to 21-40 years group, 33% fall into the 41-60 years age category, and 17% are patients who are above 60 years of age. 

"Till now there are 2,902 COVID19 positive cases in India. 601 positive cases have been reported since yesterday, 12 deaths also reported yesterday taking total deaths to 68. 183 people have recovered/discharged," he further added.

Maharashtra has the highest number of COVID-19 cases with 423, followed by Tamil Nadu with 411. Delhi has the third highest case with 386.

On Friday, the health ministry expressed concern over obstacles put up by patients towards doctors treating them and certain media reports which claimed that patients misbehaved with the medical staff. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs informed that it has written a letter to the state government urging them to take strict action in cases of attack on healthcare & frontline workers.
