Army has embarked on an unexplored journey by promoting Qirat (Quran recital) competition in north Kashmir.

A Qirat Competition was organised by Territorial Army Camp, Hamre at Government Higher Secondary School Goshbug on Thursday.

"The competition commenced with a warm welcome extended to a huge crowd of more than 800 people by the Army's Religious Teacher Subedar Tahir Hafiz. It was followed by Tilawat-e-Quran after which the Qirat competition commenced," said Colonel NN Joshi, defence spokesman at Srinagar.

Twenty students participated in the competition and impressed one and all with their knowledge, zeal and articulation. "They were further encouraged by the presence and guidance of renowned Qarees including Mufti Abdul Rehman and Maulvi Noor-Ud-Din", he said

Brigadier SH Naqvi, Commander Haiderbeig Camp complimented the children for their exceptional participation and conveyed Ramadan greetings on behalf of the Army to the entire gathering. Laer prizes were also distributed to the participants.

The prize distribution was followed by the evening Namaz and the Iftaar. "All the participants and the locals were very happy that such a huge event was happening in their area. Many young boys and girls would get inspiration to become better in Qirat," said Ghulam Ahmad Bhat a local resident.
