Army called in Darjeeling, to stage flag march
The army has been called out in Darjeeling following clashes between supporters of the GNLF and Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council employees and rival GJM.
SILIGURI: The army has been called out in Darjeeling and will conduct flag marches in that town on Friday evening following clashes between supporters of the GNLF and Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council employees on one hand and rival Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) on the other.
A former GNLF councillor K B Gurung was stabbed with a kukri when DGHC headquarters, Lalkuthi, was surrounded by supporters of the GJM and were resisted by the GNLF cadre and employees of the DGHC, Inspector General of Police (North Bengal) R J S Nawla said.
The stabbing of the former GNLF councillor infuriated supporters of the GNLF who surrounded the Darjeeling police station, leading the outnumbered police to call in the army, Nawla said.
Gurung, who was stabbed in the neck and hands, was rushed to hospital and is reported to be out of danger, the IGP said.
