Amid tensions at the Line of Control after the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir, the armies of Pakistan and India will be participating in an anti-terrorism military exercise in Russia next month.

The exercise, an initiative under the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), is to be held from September 10 to September 21 at Orenburg in Russia.

This year, Russia has asked Mongolia, Turkmenistan, Belarus and Iran to send their troops as special guests to take part in the muti-lateral anti-terrorism military exercise.

Sources said that the theme of the exercise is employment of groups of coalition forces to counter international terrorism and provide security in Central Asia.

Further, cyber security will also be part of the exercise apart from combative anti-terror operations.

Though not an alliance on the lines of NATO, the SCO is an effort to stitch together Eurasia, a historically interconnected region. The founding members of SCO are China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. India and Pakistan officially joined this organisation in 2017.

Member states of the SCO will participate in the joint military drill to promote mutual trust, cooperation and coordination against terrorist threats and to maintain regional peace and stability, said people aware about the matter.

The exercises are biannual, multinational drills with the goal of enhancing counterterrorism coordination and cooperation among the eight member countries.

India hopes that cooperation in security and counterterrorism among SCO members can play a major role in addressing the threat of terrorism in the Eurasian region including, the Afghanistan-Pakistan zone. It is also keen on deepening its security cooperation with the SCO and its Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure.
