The incident took place in Runnisaidpur and the bus was headed from Muzaffarpur to Aurai (Sitamarhi).

"It appears the driver lost control while trying to overtake another vehicle. As the bus was on an overbridge, it rammed into the railing and landed on its roof in a dry canal," a Bihar police officer said.

Sitamarhi DM Rajeev Raushan and SP Hari Prasath S rushed to the spot for the relief and rescue operations. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed grief and directed the local administration to disburse ex-gratia compensation to the kin of the deceased at the earliest. He also directed for providing adequate medical attention to the injured. State transport minister Santosh Kumar Nirala said a probe will be ordered into the accident.

The accident comes on the heels of the Muzaffarpur accident, in which nine schoolkids were crushed to death by a speeding Bolero allegedly driven by suspended BJP leader Manoj Baitha.
