It’s official! Information commissioner AN Tiwari will succeed chief information commissioner (CIC) Wajahat Habibullah, who demits office on Thursday.
Confirming the news to DNA, the new CIC said: “I have been informed about the decision. This is a great opportunity for me to serve the cause of the RTI Act.”
The appointment will, however, be a short one as Tiwari completes his five-year term in the central information commission on December 19, 2010.
The 1969-batch IAS officer was earlier secretary in the department of personnel and training.
One of the most important decisions he took in that capacity was to bring income-tax returns of political parties under public scrutiny.
Tiwari’s appointment as CIC has, however, has not gone down well with right to information activists.
“It is a very unfortunate decision by the government. They could not find any other candidate in a population of over 125 crore. The government did not heed our pleas for a transparent system,” Arvind Kejriwal said.
The Magsaysay award winning activist was part of the group that prepared the RTI legislation.
Tiwari had been the frontrunner for the post for a long time. He would have been given the post last year itself when Habibullah wanted to resign to become head of J&K Information Commission.
However, the plan was shelved as the government asked the outgoing CIC to continue after activists across the country raised a hue and cry demanding a transparancy.
