BJP chief Amit Shah on Tuesday stepped in to counter a challenge from the Congress by talking to state minister Vijay Sardesai, who heads Goa Forward Party (GFP). Sardesai too confirmed this in Panaji, stating Shah had called to discuss the political situation in Goa and to "ensure stability".

Shah also held a meeting with Ram Lal, one of the three leaders who was sent to the state to assess the ground situation and talk to MLAs and allies. Lal and two other central leaders — BL Santhosh and Vinay Puranik — had arrived in Goa on Sunday. The central observers briefed the leadership about the ground situation and possible options. Shah, later, visited Parrikar in AIIMS on Monday evening.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman attacked Congress for not showing any sensitivity towards the ailing Chief Minister Manohar Parrrikar. Interacting with Delhi's women press corps, she lamented the Congress was out to take advantage and playing politics out of Parrikar ailment. "The CM is ill. That is why he is not attending his office. What Congress is doing, shows their desperation and lust for power," she said, adding the party has lost all the morals.

Sources say the GFP and independents supporting the government have rejected stop-gap arrangements and have sought a more permanent arrangement. The observers are believed to have told allies that they will get back with some new formula after consulting party president Amit Shah and PM Narendra Modi.

What is worrying the BJP is the Congress plan to move no-confidence motion after the Governor rejecting their claim. Besides Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, two other ministers — Urban Development Minister Francis D'Souza and Power Minister Pandurang Madkaikar — are ill and unable to attend the House proceedings. That brings the effective strength of the House to 37 and BJP strength to 11. Congress has 16 MLAs.
