A division bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Suneet Kumar asked the Director, Family Planning of Uttar Pradesh and the Chief Medical Officer of Varanasi to file their reply and fixed the matter for hearing after four weeks.

The order came on the PIL filed by Savitri Bai Phule Women's Organisation, which alleged that in January this year as many as 73 women were sterilised within a span of a few hours at a sterilisation camp held inside a Primary Health Centre.

The PIL has also alleged that the women were also asked to lie down on floors to undergo the surgeries at the PHC in Chirai village.
