All you need to know about the Park Street rape case

• In the wee hours of the night on February 5, 2012, Suzette Jordan met five youths at a night club on Park Street. They offered a lift and promised to drop her home when she was leaving the nightclub.

• Soon after, she was gang-raped by the five— Kader Khan, Md. Ali, Nasir Khan, Ruman Khan and Sumit Bajaj—in a moving car and later, dumped near Exide Crossing in Kolkata.

• Around 3.30 am on February 6, 2012, after being dumped, she boarded a taxi to her residence in Behala.

• On February 9, 2012, Jordan filed an FIR mentioning gang-rape with the Park Street Police Station. The officers on duty reportedly laughed at her and asked her in what positions she was raped in.  

• On February 14, 2012, Jordan underwent a medical examination at a state-run hospital, eight days after she was gang raped. The medical examination report noted ‘injury marks to private parts’, proving that she was raped.

•  The case was transferred to the Detective Department of the Kolkata Police after it made it to the headlines. Police made the first arrest on February 18, 2012, nabbing three of the accused— Nasir Khan, Ruman Khan and Sumit Bajaj.

• Police filed a chargesheet against the five accused in May 2012 and declared  Kader Khan and Md. Ali as absconding.

• The trial of the case began on March 2, 2012.

• On April 4, 2012, Damayanti Sen, an IPS officer, who was the then Kolkata Police’s Joint Commissioner (Crime) and cracked the Park Street Rape case was shunted out and transferred to Barrackpore as DIG (Training).

• On February 19, 2013, a fast track court in Kolkata framed charges of gang-rape, criminal intimidation and conspiracy against the three accused.

• In June 2013, a year after the incident took place, she decided to reveal her identity by hitting the streets to protest against the series of rapes that had taken place in Bengal.

• Jordan died of meningoencephalitis in a state-run hospital on March 13, 2015.

• In November 2015, nearly four years after the trial began, proceedings concluded. The Kolkata Sessions Court announced that the verdict would be announced on December 10, 2015.  

• On December 10, 2015, Additional Sessions Judge Chiranjib Bhattacharya of the Kolkata Sessions Court pronounced the three accused guilty. The two remaining accused are still absconding.

• Quantum of punishment announced on December 11, 2015. Three convicted sentenced to 10 years in jail.
