Asking people from all sections of the society to protest against the recent rape cases in Kolkata, social activist and litterateur Mahasweta Devi on Saturday said West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee should rise to the occasion.

When asked to comment on the recent rape cases, the Magsaysay awardee said, "It is very unfortunate. People from all sections of the society, including Mamata Banerjee, should look at reality.... She should rise up to the occasion."

On the chief minister's criticism of the media for highlighting rape cases, she said, "I don't agree to that. No one will." The author said a lot of improvement was needed on the law and order front in the state.
