Even before India won the toss in the historic match played at Mohali, punters had already declared Team India winners. In fact, India's rates remained consistently lower than Pakistan even after major upsets during Indian batting, making India a favourite to enter the final of the ICC World Cup.
The rate on the Indian cricket team was 58 paise as compared to 60 paise for Pakistan during the beginning of the match. "The Indian side has been a hot favourite among the punters and they want to bet money on them," a bookie said.
He added that the rate of India and Pakistan remained 60 and 67 paise respectively when Virendra Sehwag was on the crease and hit Umar Gul for 20 runs in his very first over. The bookie further said that the rate of Indian cricket team remained lower than the Pakistani cricket team in the entire first innings.
As soon as Sehwag got out, the rate for India fell to 54 paise as against 56 paise for Pakistan. The winning possibility of Pakistan kept on increasing after every wicket. However, bookies did not allow the rate of the Indian team to shoot up. "If we let the rate increase, it would result in panic among the punters and the flow of money would stop," the bookie revealed. The rate of Indian team and Pakistan were respectively 87 and 90 when Yuvraj Singh got out and again decreased to 80 and 84 paise when Sachin Tendulkar's wicket fell.
However, the rate of Indian team did not fall even after MS Dhoni's wicket.
