Jnanpith winner Mahakavi Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri has passed away. He was 94 years old. He was being treated for pneumonia in the intensive care unit of West Fort Hi-Tech Hospital.
He has authored over fifty works, including poetry, short stories, plays, translations, and essays, and has been active in the national movement and the Yogakshema Sabha activities. He has received Padma Shri, Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, and Ezhuthachan Award.
Wife: The late Sridevi Antarjan. Children: Parvati, Indira, Vasudevan, Sreeja, Leela, and Narayanan. He is the brother of the famous painter Akkitham Narayanan.
He was born on March 18, 1926, in Kumaranalloor, Palakkad district, the son of Vasudevan Namboothiri and Chekoor Manakkal Parvathy Antarjan. He studied Vedas, English, Mathematics, and Tamil. He started writing poetry as a child. He was a member of the editorial board of Akkitham Yogakshemam and Mangalodayam magazines, which worked in the national movement led by Gandhiji and in the Yogakshemasabha for the upliftment of the Namboothiri community. From the kitchen to the stage, she has acted in plays such as Collective Farming. He was an officer in All India Radio.
He was also the Vice President of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, the Vice President of the Kochi Changampuzha Memorial Society, the Director of the Kottayam Sahitya Pravarthaka Sahakaranasangham, the President of the Tapasya Kalasahithya Vedi, the President of the Kadavallur Anyonya Parishad, and the Secretary of the Ponnani Central Arts Committee.
The main works are Twentieth Century Epic, Sacrifice, The Past Peace, The Ruined World, Manasapooja, The Story of Marble, The Flowers of Conscience, Bhagavatam (translation, three volumes), Selected Poems of Akkitham, Kalikottil, Nimisha Kshetra.
