The leader paid floral tributes to a portrait of Ramachandran, also her political mentor, while scores of AIADMK workers thronged his memorial at Marina in Chennai.

Party Treasurer and Chief Minister O Panneerselvam read out a pledge, repeated by his colleagues, senior leaders and party workers, saying they will stand by Jayalalithaa who had the capacity to "come out of any challenges," in an apparent indication of her conviction in an assets case.

The former Chief Minister was sentenced in the Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case by a Bengaluru special court and the Supeme Court, which had earlier granted her bail, had recently extended it and allowed her appeal in Karnataka High Court.
