This is Amdavad — drenched, soaked and drowned by torrential rains that made life come to a complete halt on a lazy Sunday.The city witnessed one of the worst rainfalls since last decade on Saturday night and Sunday morning that killed six people and accounted for loss of property worth lakhs of rupees. Four of a family died due to a house collapse early in the morning on Sunday, while two got drowned in the flooded underpasses.

According to firebrigade sources, the shikhar (Kalash) of temple, the MahaKali temple in the Dudheswar area collapsed and fell down on a nearby house killing four occupants, all of a family staying in the house — Sushila Hitendra (42), Vandana Hitendra (17), Mann Hitendra (19) and Ashwin Hitendra (6). Raju, another family member of the family, was however, luckily escaped with life.

"Rescue operation started immediately after the house collapsed. However, heavy downpour and water logging hampered the rescue operations for some time," a source in Ahmedabad Fire and Emergencies Service told DNA.

After continuous efforts for over five to six hours, the AFES personnel located the body of one Anil Sindhi, a 17-year-old youth, working as a computer repairman, who drowned in Akhbarnagar underbridge in the wee hours of Sunday at 2 am. An eyewitness and a close friend of Sindhi, Nishit Patel told DNA that both of them were at Akhbarnagar circle and decided to eat something as it was raining heavily. "When I saw the water at the Akhbarnagar underbridge, I refused to go ahead, but Anil was adamant to cross the bridge," Patel told DNA. He further said that though the water mark didn't seem too high, yet he (Sindhi) drowned before his eyes. A shocked Patel remained rooted to the spot till Sindhi's body was fished out late on Sunday noon.

Another youth, one Jagdish Parmar (25), was drowned in the newly-constructed Nirnaynagar Garnala underpass while he tried to cross it when the water level was flowing above danger mark. Moreover, one more youth drowned in a pond in Sola. The body of the unidentified youth of around 25 years was recovered from the pond near Ramdevji Temple in Sola, police sources told DNA. Prima facie evidences show that he  died from drowning.
