A Boeing 787 Dreamliner plane, operated by Air India, tragically crashed in Ahmedabad earlier this week, killing almost everyone on board and many more on the ground. India's aviation watchdog -- the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) -- has since ordered the carrier to complete safety checks on its entire Boeing Dreamliner fleet. Air India has said in a statement that it is in the process of completing the checks and informed that it could lead to delays in some flights. Read on to know more on this.
Checks done on 9 planes
According to an Air India statement posted on its official X account, the airline said the one-time checks "are being carried out on the Boeing 787 fleet as they return to India, before being cleared for their next operations."
The company has a total of 33 Boeing 787 planes, as per the statement. "Air India has completed such checks on nine of the Boeing 787 aircraft and are on track to complete this process for the remaining 24 aircraft within the timeline provided by the regulator (DGCA)," it added in the update.
Air India warns of delays
In the same statement, Air India warned that the process could lead to delays in some of its long-haul flights. "Some of these checks could lead to higher turnaround time and potential delays on certain long-haul routes especially those to airports with operating curfews. Customers will be duly notified about any delays. They are advised to check the status of their flights...before heading to the airport," it stated.
"For customers affected by this disruption, refunds on cancellation or complimentary rescheduling are being offered to those who opt for it," the carrier further said.
Ahmedabad plane crash
Air India's Flight 171, on way to the London Gatwick Airport, crashed just moments after taking off from the Ahmedabad international airport on Thursday (June 12), killing 241 people on board and dozens others on the ground. Ramesh Viswashkumar, a 40-year-old British citizen of Indian origin, is the sole survivor of the tragic incident. An investigation to determine the cause of the crash is currently underway.
