Ahmedabad Muncipal Corporation's inaction led to dogs' killing: Congress

The Congress raised the issue of poisoning of nearly 34 dogs in Behrampura in the standing committee meeting held on Thursday. The party termed it as a reaction of citizens who are fed up with the dog menace due to inaction on part of AMC.

"We regret the incident and such incidents should not be repeated in future," Surendra Baxi, Congress member of standing committee said.

He said that people took the law in their hands as the civic body failed to find a solution to the issue. The civic body has spent crores of rupees on the sterilisation of dogs, but has not received the desired result.

"The cattle nuisance and control department (CNCD) catch dogs from various areas and leave them in Pirana resulting into nuisance for the residents," said Baxi. He also alleged that the officials of CNCD denied taking complaints about dead dogs as removing the dead bodies of small animals do not come under their purview.

The civic body had planned a separate enclosure for street dogs, during mayor Amit Shah’s reign. However, no action is taken in this direction. "The civic body must carry out the post mortem of the dogs and file a criminal complaint with the police, to find out the culprit behind this crime," Baxi said.

However, none of the three Congress corporators from Behrampura ward, including the leader of opposition  Badruddin Shaikh, were aware of such an incident.

IP Gautam, municipal commissioner, agreed to carry out the post mortem and also file a non-cognisant complaint with the police.
