"Afzal Guru was hanged this (Saturday) morning. This is not a time for politics but calm, restraint and sobriety," Singh said on the microblogging site Twitter.

Convicted for his role in the attack on Parliament in 2001, Afzal Guru was hanged a few metres away from the Tihar Jail cell where he was lodged since 2001, said the jail's Director General Vimla Mehra Saturday.

"He was lodged in special security jail number 3 and was hanged about 20 metres away from the cell," Mehra added.
