The Mahasabha President Lalji Prasad Nirmal declared that after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the organization has decided to confer 'Dalit Mitra' award to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for being the most 'dalit-friendly' political leader in the country.

"Modiji has given special attention to address the problems being faced by the community and launched several welfare schemes and programmes for 30 crore dalits in the country," he pointed.

Nirmal said that he was seeking time from the PMO to confer the award at a function either in Lucknow or in Delhi, depending on the convenience of the Prime Minister.

Nirmal said that Modiji was the first prime minister to have accorded so much respect to Dr Ambdekar, by connecting all five places associated with Babasaheb and turning them into pilgrims.

A controversy is already on within Ambedkar Mahasabha over Nirmal's decision to institute the Dalit Mitra award without taking any consent from its founding members.

The awardee is the recipient of a shawl, a citation, a statue of Dr Ambedkar and a saffronised Chair with an inscription of 'Dalit Mitra' on it.

"Giving the award to Yogi Adityanath, known for his government's anti-dalit policies, is a big joke and a slap on Dr Ambedkar's followers," charged Dr SR Darapuri, an IPS officer, who was arrested, along with retired IAS Officer Harosh Chandra and others, for protesting against the award being bestowed on Adityanath on April 14 at a function in Lucknow.

All-India Ambedkar Mahasabha is an organisation involved with spreading Dr Ambedkar's ideals.
