The attack on non-Gujarati migrant labourers in Gujarat has taken a political colour with Patidar community leader Hardik Patel now assuring a 'safe haven' to his 'north Indian brethren' in the western state. Patel had earlier come out against Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor saying, "I completely disagree with Thakor's stand on the North Indian community."

On Tuesday, state capital Patna was filled with posters put up by Patel Jagarukta Manch (PJM), saying “atrocities on Biharis will not be tolerated”.

The campaign in Bihar is being spearheaded by PJM member Sanjay Patel and informs people about a helpline number issued by Hardik. The poster says, “If anyone assaults people from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand or any other state, who have come to Gujarat to earn their livelihood, or they are threatened by someone to leave Gujarat, they should immediately contact Hardik Patel on his helpline number 9978520793.”

PJM members said Hardik stood rock solid behind the people of Bihar in Gujarat as he believed that all Indians were one. A separate WhatsApp number, as well as contact numbers of some PJM leaders, have also been shared on these posters, which promises to extend help to any person in need.

The NDA in Bihar, however, termed it a publicity stunt by Hardik. “At a time when he himself is losing his base in Gujarat, such claims are nothing but political gimmicks,” a senior BJP leader said.

Earlier, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has asked people from Bihar to stay put in Gujarat as he had assured that the state government there was alert about the matter. A senior official in the Government of Bihar said top bureaucrats were in touch over the incidents and the situation was under control.

However, the assurances fail to allay the fears of the migrant labourers and the exodus of Biharis from Gujarat continues. East Champaran resident Kunal Kumar, who was working in Vadodara, said a mob visited his factory and threatened all residents of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh “to leave the state before they visited again”. “I have come back but I don’t know if I will be able to return and if I still have a job there,” he told DNA over the phone.
