A day after Pakistan’s military court awarded the death sentence to Kulbhushan Jadhav, London-based British-Indian lawyer and activist Jas Uppal, who had launched an international campaign to get Sarabjit Singh released from Pakistan’s custody, expressed her desire to take his case to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The lawyer wants the UN to intervene in the matter as the death sentence was awarded to Jadhav without India being granted any consular access to him.

According to sources, the lawyer, who had started the ‘Free Sarabjit Singh’ campaign and lobbied with human rights groups and lawyers across the world for his release, has now prepared documentation to approach the UN to intervene in the matter of Jadhav’s death sentence. The lawyer’s associate contacted Jadhav’s family on Tuesday seeking details of the case.

The source also said that Uppal has already written to the UN requesting its intervention in the case. According to an associate of Uppal, she has stressed that the case should not be seen through the prism of international politics, but purely as an issue of violation of human rights, and her intervention would be restricted to the latter domain only.

Uppal confirmed her interest in the case to DNA over the phone and said she would herself contact the family soon. She, however, refused to elaborate further.  A US-based activist who was associated with Uppal during the `Free Sarabjit Singh’ campaign told DNA, “I have spoken to Kulbhushan’s father and have conveyed Uppal’s message to them, that she will be contacting them and is keen to help them in the matter.”
