The Election Commission has put a hold on playing the theme song of singer-turned BJP MP Babul Supriyo and issued a showcause notice after an FIR has been filed against it alleging that it spread canards against the TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The complaint has been filed on Tuesday at Asansol South Police Station of Paschim Bardhaman district by one Gaurav Gupta, general secretary of Paschim Bardhaman Students Library Coordination Committee. The complaint (DNA has access to a copy of it) said that the lyrics of the song were ‘malicious and derogatory in nature and damages the reputation of Trinamool Congress and Ms Mamata Banerjee’.

“Based on the complaint, Supriyo has been showcaused and has been given 48 hours to reply. The commission feels that the model code of conduct has been violated and the song would not be played until a decision is arrived at,” said a senior official of the Chief Electoral Officer’s office, West Bengal.

Supriyo, however, said that it was up to the people to accept or reject the song. “The lyrics of the songs are slogans which had been used as slogans at multiple rallies including one by the SFI (students’ wing of the CPIM). What had been said are truths and I have just put those in a song. It is up to the people to accept or reject it now,” he said. He also said that filing FIRs was a regular habit of the TMC. “It is a circus which they are used to doing,” he added.

Jitendra Tiwari, mayor of Asansol said that a legal step has been taken against an offender. “It could have been anyone. Babul has not done any development for Asansol. Mamata has. At least he could have sung well. He failed to deliver that too, to the people of Asansol,” he said.

The election commission has also sought a report from the North District Election Officer based on the complaint by leaders of Trinamool Congress against the alleged high-handedness of the Central force.

In a letter on Tuesday, signed by party MPs Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Derek O’ Brien and former MP Dr Chandan Mitra, it had been alleged that the forces had been talking to media in an intimidating manner. ‘While we do not have any reservation on the deputation of security personnel, in consultation with the state administration, we place on record our strong objection in the manner in which some of the Central Forces personnel are being briefed by the Bharatiya Janata Party and then creating an uneasy atmosphere and threatening local people’, the letter read.
