Less than a week after the Pulwama attack, more than 2,500 Kashmiri youth swarmed the army recruitment rally in Baramulla to apply for the 111 posts. More than 6,000 youth are expected to appear for the physical tests during the five-day army recruitment rally that will end on February 22.

The recruitment drive started on Monday for the youth of three North Kashmir districts – Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora. Out of the 111 posts, 108 are for general duty soldiers and three for the tradesmen.

"The recruitment drive is from February 18 to February 22 in three districts of north Kashmir. It will continue till February 22 for the physical part of it. We expect 5,000-6,000 people for recruitment," said Colonel Ved Beniwal, commanding officer.

The enthusiasm and zeal of the youth to don the olive greens can be gauged by the fact that even bone-chilling cold could not deter them from appearing for the tests.

"Despite bad weather, the response was fabulous. For 111 vacancies more than 6,000 people are expected to show up," said the commanding officer.

For the youth, the slain 22-year-old Lieutenant Ummer Fayaz and slain Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani are ideals from whom they have drawn inspiration to serve the motherland, officers said.

Terrorists had abducted and killed Lieutenant Ummer Fayaz of the Rajputana Riffles on May 10 2017.

Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani was awarded the country's highest peace time gallantry award 'Ashok Chakra' posthumously on Republic Day for killing two top terrorists in Batgund area of Shopian district in November.
