According to Jansatta's report, following the decision to appoint veteran Mallikarjuna Kharge's as the chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Gandhi could be asked to take charge as the Leader of Opposition till the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Kharge will be the PAC chief from April. He has been the Leader of the Opposition.

The news comes after speculations about Rahul Gandhi taking over as President of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP). Jyotiraditya Scindia, a close aide of Rahul Gandhi and the son of former Congress leader Madhavrao Scindia, is likely to be deputy leader of the CPP.

Rahul Gandhi-led Congress had bagged 44 seats in the Lok Sabha in the 2014 General Elections. Its performance in recent assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand too was lacklustre.
