An FIR had been filed against the Gujarat MLA and JNU student leader Umar Khalid for their alleged provocative speeches during an event in Pune on December 31, spreading disharmony between the Maratha and the Dalit communities that led to violence at Bhima Koregaon there the next day.

He asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to come clean on the safety of Dalits. "I will go to the PM on January 9 with copies of the Manu Smriti and the Constitution and ask him what his choice is."

"I did not make any inflammatory speech nor did I take part in the bandh in Maharashtra. I am being targeted by the BJP and the Sangh," Mevani said at the Press Club of India in New Delhi.
