The tensions between India and Malaysia are going to further rise as New Delhi is likely to tighten curbs on Malaysian imports after Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad refused to revisit his remarks on Indian matters.

India has restricted the import of refined palm oil from Malaysia after Mohamad's comment on issues like abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir and new citizenship law, issues New Delhi considers are its internal matters.

India is further looking to tighten trade restrictions on imports from Malaysia after Mahathir Mohamad on Tuesday said he was concerned about the trade issue but would not stop from speaking.

According to a Times of India report, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is now working to impose technical standards on microprocessors and also putting in place a quality control order for telecom equipment.

The report said that customs authorities have been asked to ensure compliance of the quality control order.

In the backdrop of adverse remarks by the Malaysian Prime Minister on the Citizenship Amendment Act and the Kashmir issue, India last week imposed restrictions on imports of refined palm oil and palmolein.

Mahathir said on Tuesday that his government will now need to find another solution.

"We're concerned of course, because we sell a lot of palm oil to India, but on the other hand, we need to be frank and when something goes wrong, we need to say it," he was quoted as saying by Malaysian media.

"If we allow things to go wrong and think only about the money, then a lot of things will go wrong," he told reporters.

"The fact is what's happening in India today is causing a lot of unhappiness among the people there, and the whole world feels that it is wrong to discriminate against others," he said.

India buys nearly 15 million tonnes of vegetable oil of which palm oil comprises 9 million tonnes with Indonesia and Malaysia being the top two importers. India is the largest market for Malaysian palm oil.
