BHOPAL: Terming those pleading for mercy for Mohammed Afzal Guru, facing execution in Parliament attack case, as "traitors", Akhil Bharatiya Vidharthi Parishad (ABVP) on Saturday said it will launch a nation-wide campaign in favour of the death sentence awarded to him.

"Those seeking commutation of death sentence to Afzal are simply indulging in vote bank polities ignoring national interest and country's security," ABVP national secretary Vishnu Dutt Sharma said.

Accusing the Congress and UPA government at the Centre of deliberately maintaining silence on the issue, he said it raises a question mark about their intentions with regard to security of the country.

ABVP would launch a campaign for social boycott of those supporting clemency for Afzal, Sharma said adding that ABVP would also appeal President A P J Abdul Kalam to ignore the mercy plea for Afzal.
