The RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), has swept the students’ union polls at the University of Hyderabad, ending an eight-year domination of Left groups.

The ABVP won all six posts in the triangular fight, results of which were declared on Saturday night. It was facing a tought fight from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) - an alliance of Adivasi-Dalit-Bahujan and Muslim organisations - and the Student Federation of India (SFI) - the student wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

ABVP's Aarti N Nagpal won the president's post, only the second woman to hold the post. Nagpal secured 1,663 votes to defeat SFI rival Erram Naveen by 334 votes. UDA presidential candidate Sreeja Vasthavi secureD 842 votes.

Other winners were Amit Kumar (vice-president), Dheeraj Sangoji (general secretary), Praveen Kumar S (joint secretary), Aravind S Kumar (cultural secretary) and Nikhil Raj K (sports secretary).

The voting took place on October 5 under tight security.

The win for the ABVP came after a gap of 8 years as the saffron group failed to win a single seat in those elections. The ABVP had joined hands with two other student groups — Other Backward Classes Federation (OBCF) and the newly formed Sevalal Vidyarthi Dal to contest the student body polls this year.

The victory comes two years after the unrest on the campus following the suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula in January 2016. Vemula had committed suicide on January 17, 2016, after alleged caste-based discrimination on the campus.

Meanwhile, the ABVP suffered a major jolt in the Allahabad University students' union elections as Samajwadi Party's student wing Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha (SCS) and the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) won most of the posts.

The university had witnessed violence on Friday after the results of the student union elections were declared.

SCS's Uday Prakash Yadav was elected the president, while Avaneesh Yadav was chosen as the Vice President.
