Eight people, all construction labourers, were killed and 13 others  injured in a powerful IED (improvised explosive device) blast, triggered by  suspected militants, in Manipur capital Imphal on Friday evening.

Official sources said the condition of three of the injured was ‘critical’. The  bomb went off at around 7:30pm at Khoyathong area in the heart of Imphal. Those killed were from outside the north-east and they were working for Kolkata based  company Simplex Projects Limited. The injured were rushed to the Regional  institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal.

No outfit has claimed responsibility for the blast. Manipur has over 35 militant  groups.

Earlier in the day, Assam Rifles jawans patrolling the Ukhrul-Imphal road in Imphal East district had a narrow escape when an IED, planted by the roadside, exploded. An auto-rickshaw driver was injured in the incident.

The outlawed Peoples Liberation Army (PLA), an armed wing of Revolutionary Peoples Front had claimed responsibility for the morning blast.
