Thanks to the entrepreneurial skills infused into them by the institute, as many as eight students of the 2009 batch of Post-graduate Programme for Executives (PGPX) of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) have decided to create jobs rather than seek jobs. This means they will turn themselves into entrepreneurs.

Even as the placement of the fourth batch of PGPX is scheduled to wind up by the end of June, these eight students from the batch of 80 have already chosen to start their own business ventures. While they are gearing up to set up their ventures in groups and individuals, all of them will not be taking any job offers in the placement.

Professor and chairperson of PGPX at IIMA, Shailesh Gandhi, said: “The kind of profile of the students who already have an expertise and the nature of the programme which nurtures them further has encouraged the students to start their own business ventures. We also provide institutional backup to these students.”

Three students - Manish Jobanputra, Dheeraj Chopra and Manish Sharma - who will be jointly setting up a business venture, had decided to become entrepreneurs even before the placements began. Jobanputra who was a research scientist with GE India Technology Center, before joining PGPX, said: “The harmony and trust upon each other have made us confident to win any kind of challenge. It was about two months after we met that we decided to set up our own business venture instead of working for a company. We have a couple of business plans in our hands and we are researching and trying to zero in to one very soon.”
About why they chose to become entrepreneurs, Chopra said: “It is about the joy of creating something on your own and owning it.”
