At least 66 buildings, including a church, have been abandoned and eight buildings dismantled in the Hunthar locality of Aizawl after the area started sinking since last year, state Disaster Management and Rehabilitation department officials today said.

The officials said one building was dismantled today, while 20 families were evacuated from their homes to safer places yesterday as the land continued to sink due to incessant rain that hit Aizawl since Wednesday last.

Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Director C Lalpeksanga said t a detailed project report (DPR), based on the survey report by experts from the Geological Survey of India (GSI) was submitted to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for undertaking preventive works in the area.

Lalpeksanga said the state government has asked for Rs 15 crore for the works and has already released Rs 2 crore under the disaster emergency fund for taking up emergency works like construction of drainage channel in the area.
