Despite a warning by the state government on Wednesday, its employees showed their mettle on Thursday by going on mass casual leave for one day. Around five lakh employees were on CL paralysing the
government.
Office-bearers of Gujarat State Employees Co-ordination Committee (GSECC) said that after the success of the mass CL, they will be announcing more programmes in the coming days.
The state secretariat functioned as usual as the Sachivalaya Employees Association did not join the protest.
Buildings like Krishi Bhavan, which are usually abuzz with activity, wore a deserted look. Officers too left early as there was nobody to serve them a glass of water or fetch a file. “I returned home early as there was nobody in the office. Since all the staff was on mass CL even someone who wanted to work couldn’t,” said an officer of the state agriculture department.
Nikhil Desai, organising secretary of GSECC said, “The state government employees have fully supported the cause. The co-ordination committee will meet in a day or two to decide the future course of action. The state government tried its level best to break the employees’ unity but all the employees expressed their faith in GSECC’s call.”
He added, “All the police cases against office-bearers are three-year-old cases registered after GSECC’s rally on December 6, 2009.”
The employees’ key demands include payment of transport allowance, education allowance, TA/DA, special pay, project allowance, among others, as per Sixth Pay Commission recommendations. They are also demanding enhancement of retirement age from 58 to 60.
